The Shenandoah River is a major tributary of the Potomac River and it flows roughly 150 miles through Virginia and a small portion of West Virginia. It originates northeast of Front Royal and then flows near several portions of I-66, creating some of the most picturesque locations in the Southeast, perfect for fishing, boating, and jet skiing spots! The majestic Shenandoah River flows through our region of Page County and creates some of the most renowned regions to enjoy Fly Fishing in Virginia! All of our cabins are close to the hot spots for Shenandoah River Fishing; making for the perfect accommodation for a fishing trip.
The South Fork of the Shenandoah River has been called one of the best places to fish for Smallmouth bass in Virginia. The upper section of the Shenandoah River extends from Bixler’s Bridge to Foster’s Boat landing and contains all of the hotspots where you can enjoy Fishing in Virginia. Visitors that fish here typically catch large numbers of smaller fish including varieties of small and largemouth bass, pumpkin seed fish, bluegill, catfish and the occasional musky fish! The lower section of the Shenandoah River flows through the wilderness area of the George Washington National Forest and follows a wider, deeper pattern where the big guys hang out! To catch the larger fish, you'll want to take advantage of this Shenandoah River Fishing spot.
In order to enjoy Shenandoah River Fishing, you must purchase a Virginia Fishing license. These permits are available at most Walmart locations and at several of the Luray outdoor outfitter stores. Some visitors staying in our Virginia Mountain Cabins like to head out to the river on their own, and find their own Shenandoah Fishing spots, while others like to try fishing as a group with one of the Shenandoah River fishing guides.

One of the best ways to get out and experience all that the Virginia Shenandoah Valley has to offer while on your Virginia Vacation is to go Shenandoah River Canoeing and Tubing. RAs the Shenandoah River makes its way from Front Royal, it creates some excellent spots near Luray in the Shenandoah Valley where you can enjoy paddling. The crystal clear mountain water flows gently through the Virginia Shenandoah National Park and scenic locations in the George Washington National Forest, making it very popular in the summer months for visitors looking to beat the heat!
Because the Shenandoah River is so popular for Shenandoah River Fishing and tubing, several companies have set up shop along the river! You can book a guided Shenandoah River canoe trip, or Shenandoah River Fishing trip, or rent equipment from the local outfitter shops in the area. Because the Shenandoah is relatively slow moving, canoeing is the best way to enjoy the river. The river’s rocky bottom creates riffles and eddies throughout and it even has a few smaller rapids (Class II only). However, the river is mostly a mild; perfect for beginners and novice paddlers.
