George Washington National Forest
George Washington National Forest was created in 1918 and as of 2007, it encompassed 1,065,389 acres of land in the Bridgewater, Covington, Edinburg, Hot Springs, and Staunton districts. It is famed for its miles and miles of Luray VA Hiking and Shenandoah Valley Bike trails. In addition to numerous trails, the George Washington National Forest in Virginia is also a popular location for a few marathons, including the Massanutten Mountain 100 miler!

Thomas Jefferson National Forest
The Jefferson National Forest is located northwest of Luray Virginia, bordering and converging with another pristine national forest in the area, the George Washington National Forest. Created in 1936 as a separately managed area, the two forests were combined administratively in 1995. Together they encompass more than 1.8 million acres of lands throughout the Appalachian Mountains. Alone, the Jefferson National Forest encompasses more than 723,350 acres making it one of the largest National Forests in the country. Local ranger districts in the Jefferson National Forest include offices in Blacksburg, Marion, Natural Bridge, New Castle, and Wise.
