Meems Bottom Covered Bridge
Just a short drive away from our Luray Virginia Cabin Rentals is the beautiful Strathmore Estate and its famous bridge, the Meems Bottom Bridge. Located in a picturesque area of Shenandoah County, the Meems Bottom Bridge is the only Covered Bridge in Virginia left in the Northern Shenandoah region. The longest Covered Bridge in Virginia, the Meems Bottom Bridge is one of nine Famous Bridge in Virginia and one of the most charming.
The original, historic Meems Bottom Covered Bridge was built in 1894 after numerous bridges that preceded it were either burned or destroyed in war. Historic documents dating back to the days of the Civil War indicate that one of the first bridges may have been burned in 1862 by Confederate commander Stonewall Jackson in an effort to cover his path as he went up through the Shenandoah Valley ahead of the Union General John C. Fremont just prior to the Civil War Battles of Harrisonburg, Cross Keys and Port Republic. The 1894 Meems Bottom Bridge was built with massive arch supports, stone details, and footers that extended 10 feet below the riverbed ground. Spanning 204 feet across, this bridge transported thousands of travelers over the North Fork of the Shenandoah River until it burned in 1976. Most of the original timber was salvaged and the bridge was reconstructed.
The bridge is aptly named after the Meem Family that owned the beautiful Strathmore property on the Shenandoah River. The gorgeous North Fork of the Shenandoah River flows under the Meems Bottom Covered Bridge and creates some truly fantastic photographic opportunities.
